Rescuing a Dog: Who Rescues Who?

Roxy
One week ago today, I drove to Fletcher, NC and adopted a rescue dog, a one-and-a-half year old Australian Shepherd mix.  I learned about Roxy a few weeks ago when a friend posted her picture on Facebook and begged someone to adopt her.

Last October, we lost our dog, Abraham, a lab mix, to cancer.  My daughter adopted him, but he came to live with us when she moved to California eight years ago.  Abe lived a long, happy life, but his illness came upon him quickly.  One day he was fine, and the next day he wasn't. It was a shock.

I knew I'd eventually bring another dog into our home, but I wanted to give it a few months before looking.

Then, I saw Roxy's picture on Facebook.

Roxy immediately reminded me of the dog we had before Abraham, Lincoln. Yes, we named a dog Lincoln, and yes, the next dog was named Abraham (by my daughter).

I grew up with dogs and have almost always had one in the house.  Lincoln, though, was my first dog.  The rest were dogs my parents or siblings selected.  I loved all of them, but Lincoln holds a special place in my heart.
Lincoln

If I believed in dog reincarnation, I would tell you Roxy is Lincoln reincarnated...as a girl.  She reminds me of him in looks and behavior. No, she's not an exact copy of Lincoln, but she's so much like him that it's déjà vu when I'm sitting or playing with her.  So, Roxy, bounded into our lives and has captured our hearts.  Our home feels complete again.  I don't know who rescued who.

Have you ever had that one special pet that claimed your heart?  What drew you together? Did you rescue them or was it the other way around?
Roxy.  Isn't she adorable?

I agree! I feel like when we rescued our dog Coco from the Humane Society about four years ago, she completely bonded my family together. Though we technically gave her a home, she helped our hearts grow so much bigger.
